Dr. Athey obtained her PhD in Clinical Psychology in 1988 from the University of South Carolina. Her graduate training emphasized exposure to a wide range of settings and people to ensure a broad, solid foundation. Dr. Athey has worked in the prison system in South Carolina with youthful offenders, at the state psychiatric hospital with both child and adult populations, and interned at Indiana University Medical Center where she had rotations on both child and adult units. On internship, Dr. Athey established her specialty work with children and adolescents, working extensively in a premier research and teaching hospital in Indianapolis to develop both diagnostic and treatment protocols for seriously ill children and adolescents. Upon completing her internship, she relocated to the Carolinas where she spent two postdoctoral years in public mental health centers working with multiple ages and income levels. Just prior to establishing her own practice, Dr. Athey served as clinical director at the Family Center, an agency that specializes in treating sexually abused children in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Dr. Athey has put great value in obtaining a variety of life experiences outside of psychology to ensure that she provides a well-balanced approach to her work. She has spent 24 years in the martial arts resulting in two black belts in Korean and Japanese style karates. She retired from karate and moved into the more gentle and meditative martial art of Tai Chi when she started a family. She has been practicing Tai' Chi for 12 years and enjoys blending many of the principles into her therapy (see TaoHealingArts.net or thepeacefuldragon.com for more info). Dr. Athey also has played music since the age of 8 and incorporates her guitar playing into therapy with children.
Two years ago, Dr. Athey began training in bodywork method of Dr. Milton Trager which emphasizes gentle touch and alignment to ameliorate chronic tensions in the body. She was certified as a Trager practitioner in 2006 and finds this method quite useful with sensory disorders with children, for relieving chronic tension and for general enrichment with adults (see www.trager.com).
